What does AI actually see on your website?

Less than you’d think, and not what looks good to a person. An AI assistant reads the plain text and the structured data behind your pages, the actual sentences and the schema markup, not the layout, the photos, or the styling a designer spent weeks on. If the words don’t say it plainly, the AI doesn’t know it.

A person sees a page, a model sees text

When a person lands on your homepage, they take in a photo, a layout, a feel, and piece together an impression before reading a word. A model doesn’t do any of that. It reads the text content, largely stripped of design, and works from what the sentences actually say. A beautiful page with vague copy, “an unforgettable experience awaits,” gives a person atmosphere and gives a model almost nothing to work with.

This is why a site can look impressive and still be invisible to an AI assistant. The gap isn’t design quality, it’s whether the words themselves state, plainly, what you do, where you are, and who it’s for.

What structured data actually adds

Schema markup, the structured data behind FAQ blocks, business details, and review snippets, is a translation layer that tells a machine explicitly what a piece of content means, rather than making it infer. A phone number in plain text might be read correctly or might not. A phone number marked up as structured contact data removes the guesswork entirely.

It doesn’t replace clear writing, it reinforces it. A page with excellent schema and vague sentences still leaves an assistant with structured confirmation of very little. A page with clear sentences and no schema at all still tends to work, just with more room for error. The two together are what removes the doubt entirely.

What to actually check on your own site

Read your homepage’s main text with the images and styling stripped away, as plain sentences, and ask honestly whether a stranger would understand what you do and where from that text alone. Check whether your contact details, hours, and category are marked up as structured data, which a developer or a plugin like Rank Math or Yoast usually handles, rather than sitting only in a footer image or a contact form.

Look specifically for FAQ content, since a well marked up FAQ section is one of the clearest, most quotable formats an assistant can lift directly into an answer.

The fix is usually rewriting, not redesigning

Most of the gap closes with plain, direct sentences near the top of a page, not a new template. State what you do, where you are, and what a customer gets, in words a stranger could repeat back accurately. Add or check the structured data underneath. Neither step touches the visual design a person actually experiences, which is why this is often the fastest visibility fix available, and the one most owners skip because nothing looks broken.

This is the mechanical companion to why a Google ranking doesn’t mean AI can find you, since both come down to what a model can actually read versus what a person sees.

Frequently asked

Does my website design matter for AI visibility at all?

Not directly. An AI assistant reads text and structured data, not layout or styling, so a beautifully designed page with vague copy is often invisible while a plainer page with clear sentences gets read and trusted.

Do I need a developer to add structured data?

Often not. Plugins like Rank Math, which several AD sites already run, add most of the common schema types, FAQ, business details, automatically once the plain content is in place.

Is schema markup enough on its own without clear writing?

No. Schema confirms what a page means, it doesn’t invent meaning that isn’t there in the writing. Vague copy with excellent schema still gives an assistant very little to actually recommend.
