Why isn’t my business showing on Google Maps?

Usually one of four things: the listing isn’t verified, the category is wrong, the address doesn’t match what’s on your website, or a competitor with more reviews is simply outranking you nearby. Google Maps is a separate, more literal system than search, and a small mismatch in any of these is often enough to drop you off the map entirely for a nearby search.

Maps runs on stricter rules than search

Google search will show a page that is roughly relevant. Google Maps is far less forgiving, because it is answering a specific question, ‘what’s near me right now’, and it leans hard on structured data: your exact address, your category, your hours, matched against what it already knows. A page can rank fine in search and still be invisible on the map three streets away, because Maps is checking different things.

This is why ‘we rank on Google’ and ‘we show up on Maps’ are separate claims, and a business can be true on one and false on the other without anyone noticing until a guest says they couldn’t find you.

The four usual causes

Unverified listings are the most common and the easiest to miss, because an unverified profile can still exist and even show basic information, just not reliably or with full features. Wrong category is next: choosing ‘restaurant’ when you’re mainly a wine bar, or ‘lodging’ when ‘bed and breakfast’ fits better, changes which searches you appear in entirely, not just where you rank.

Address mismatches, a slightly different street format on your website than on your Google profile, confuse the system more than people expect. And sometimes nothing is wrong technically, a nearby competitor with fifty recent reviews is simply winning the proximity and relevance contest that Maps runs for every search.

How to check your own listing

Search your business by name on Google Maps from a phone, not a desktop, since local ranking can differ by device and location. Then search the category a stranger would use, ‘agriturismo near Cortona’ rather than your business name, and see where you land, if at all. Check that the address matches your website exactly, down to the street abbreviation, and that your category is the most specific accurate one available, not the broadest.

If you don’t appear at all for the category search, that’s a stronger signal than ranking low, because it usually points to verification or category rather than competition.

What actually fixes it

Verify the listing if it isn’t already, correct the category to the most specific accurate match, and make the address on your website match the Google profile character for character. None of this is expensive or slow, but it has to be done in the Google Business Profile dashboard directly, and it’s worth checking every few months, because a well meaning edit by anyone with access can quietly break one of these fields again.

I cover what it’s actually worth to get this profile right in what is a Google Business Profile optimization worth, which touches the same fields from a different angle.

Frequently asked

How long does it take for Google Maps changes to show up?

Usually a few days to two weeks after verification or a category change, though it can be faster. Address changes sometimes trigger a fresh verification step, which adds time, so make the correction and expect to wait rather than assuming something else is wrong.

Does having more reviews fix a Maps visibility problem?

Reviews help you rank once you show up at all, but they don’t fix an unverified listing or a wrong category. Check verification and category first, since more reviews on a broken listing usually doesn’t move the needle much.

Is Google Maps the same system as Google Search?

No. They share Google’s infrastructure but run different rules, Maps leans much harder on structured data like address and category, which is why a business can rank fine in search and still be invisible nearby on Maps.
